Being as I was given the honour of Marshal of the Year last year, I thought I had better start this section of the website off!

My earliest memories of motor sport was as a teenager (probably about 15 or 16) cycling from Bramcote to Mallory Park with my younger brother to watch the likes of Jochen Rindt, Graham Hill, Bruce Mclaren et al pedalling what was then the equivalent of the British Touring Cars round the Leicestershire circuit. Some of the meetings around that time were promoted by the NSCC, and I remember well the Alan Mann Ford Escorts and Ford Falcons, the Broadspeed Anglia 105Es, and who can forget the Berpop (an old sit-up- and-beg Ford Anglia with a monstrous engine!).

My interest in motor sport grew, and I found myself going to more & more meetings (although my Mum & Dad ruled out my cycling to Brands Hatch for the British Grand Prix).

Then came the “wilderness years”, as I had discovered girls, and motor sport took a back seat, although I did used to watch any and every bit of racing I could on TV.

A marriage came and went, and soon I was on my second “helping” with my wifey No:2, and I found motor sport once again. About 16 years ago, I went to the Autosport Show at the NEC and came across a stand labelled BMRMC (British Motor Racing Marshals Club for the uninitiated), and read with interest their training and grading scheme. Something like a bolt of lightning flashed across my mind, and I decided it was time to put something back into a sport which had given me so much pleasure, so I became a marshal.

Training and Novice-hood came and went and, mainly thanks to my mentor Mike Abbot, I was selected as a Pit Marshal for the 1991 European Grand Prix at Donington Park. Little did I know that during the next 15 years, my passion for the sport would take me across the world and see me acting as Pit Marshal at 10 Grand Prix, officiating in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Bahrain (!), visiting Daytona and Walt Disney Speedways in the USA, and end up as Deputy Chief Pit Marshal for the BTCC.

But now the wheel has come full circle and, at the tender age of 53, I find myself back with the NSCC as Chief Marshal, a club to which I owe so much, as it was you b***ers that got me bitten by the bug 38 years ago !!

But, seriously, I thoroughly enjoy my marshalling, and hope I can justify the faith the club has had in me, and finish my career in Sprinting with the NSCC.

Andy Offer

Monday 28th May 2007 - It is with great sadness that the club has heard of the death of Andy Offer whilst on holiday in Italy.
Andy had been our chief marshal for a number of years and he will be sadly missed. He had been involved with motorsport for most of his life. Nottingham Sports Car Club would like to extend heart felt condolances to Andys family.
